Street photography workshops

with JEFF ASCOUGH & Sarah G ascough

A street and documentary photographer from the day she picked up a camera, Sarah's photographs have been published internationally and showcased by Leica Fotografie International and Leica. Amateur photographer magazine described her work as "a classic combination of finely tuned photographic art with a humorous eye.”

Her documentary/street book, Showfield, was accepted into the Martin Parr Foundation library and received rave reviews from the likes of Tom Stoddart, Homer Sykes and Peter Dench.

"I was fortunate enough to do a street photography workshop in Blackpool and all I can say is, WOW, what a wonderful experience. Jeff and Sarah were extremely hospitable, as well as very open and honest about their approach to photography. I have come away with a new insight into street photography and feel extremely motivated to go out and implement some of the new ideas I've taken away from my excellent day with them. If you ever get the chance to attend one of their workshops, I would very highly recommend it and you'll almost certainly see me there too, as I will most definitely be signing up was an outstanding 10/10 experience."

Why choose our street photography workshop?

From free photo-walks to online classes, there are hundreds of photographers offering street photography workshops. So, why choose ours?

Well, we think we are pretty unique in the street workshop marketplace.

Tutors that walk the walk

We shoot street photography as part of our livelihood. We are passionate about what we do and spend many, many days walking the streets, taking pictures and honing our craft. We have taught photographers of all levels and backgrounds, and many come back year after year.

We have two different styles; Jeff is often focused on light and composition, whereas Sarah is looking for humour and character. With us, you can experience two ways of looking at the world. Not many workshops can offer that.

Small group tuition as standard

We don't do the big group thing. It's a nightmare for street photography. Not only do the big groups attract a lot of attention on the street, but it is also impossible to give photographers the tuition they need.

In our experience, the best number for us is just TWO delegates per tutor. That's pretty much individual tuition. As there are two of us, each workshop is open to FOUR photographers. We swap groups halfway through the day so that you get to work with both of us.

Everyone is welcome. It doesn't matter if you are a keen hobbyist or a professional photographer. Street photography should be exciting and enjoyable, and everyone should be able to practice it regardless of ability or experience. Our small group policy ensures that everyone has as much tuition as needed, and at a level which they are comfortable with.

A female street photographer

A lot of our attendees are female, and Sarah's experience and perspective is invaluable to them. The guys can also learn a lot from Sarah's approach, as she works in such a unique way.

Don't take our word for it

Of course, we would say our workshop is the best out there, but don't take our word for it. Have a look at some of the unsolicited testimonials from past workshop attendees.

"It was lovely to meet you both today. I had such a good time and got exactly what I wanted from the your workshop. I've learned so much. Thanks for a fun, worthwhile day."
Ally S (Scotland)

"Thank you very much for the wonderful day in Cambridge. You put me at ease straight away, and helped me get out of my photography comfort zone. I look forward to keeping in touch."

"Thank you both so much for a fantastic day last Sunday in Blackpool! I had a brilliant time and learnt so much from you. You made the experience so enjoyable and definitely got me over my fear of taking photos of people! I've already been out and about trying out the techniques that you both showed me, I love it and I will definitely be continuing."

"Went for the Street Photography Experience in Oxford and I highly recommend it for photographers of any level. I’ve admired Jeff and Sarah’s work since I started photography and it was an absolute thrill to learn from them. Jeff and Sarah were happy to answer technical questions, such as camera settings and focus modes, but the real takeaway was learning new ways of observing and composing, which you can’t learn from any book or on your own. Between learning new ways to see or a new 24-70 lens, I’d choose this experience, every time. And it doesn’t hurt that Jeff and Sarah are really personable and fun to talk to!"

Jai Xin (Singapore)

"I have had the "Ascough" experience [in Blackpool] and I can highly recommend it. You will see Sarah and Jeff working side by side, see how different and yet how marvellous both of them are. Afterwards, you will surely have learned something about your own way of shooting/seeing the world."

Frank N (Germany)

"I was fortunate enough to attend a day of street shooting with Jeff and Sarah and enjoyed every moment of it. Learned so much."

"Thanks a lot for yesterday. It was great learning from you again and to see how you seek photos and work scenes. I have again plenty of new things to experiment with in Notts:) I look forward to seeing your Oxford photos on Instagram. I will certainly be in touch for more training and photo critique. All the best."
